Walking Greenwich Village: How the Routes Work
Washington Square Park is the neighborhood's anchor for dog owners. The park has a designated off-leash area in the southwest corner that runs morning hours. By mid-morning on weekends it gets crowded with both dogs and NYU student foot traffic filling the main paths. Our walkers know when the park works and when it is worth routing around it in favor of the quieter streets to the west.
The blocks west of Sixth Avenue, particularly the streets named rather than numbered (Waverly Place, Bank Street, Perry Street, Charles Street), are among the most walkable in the city. Wide sidewalks, low foot traffic, and a residential calm that most Manhattan neighborhoods do not have. Dogs that struggle with sensory overload elsewhere often walk completely differently on these blocks.
The West Village specifically, from Seventh Avenue West to the Hudson, has a quieter and more residential character than the blocks closer to Sixth Avenue and NYU. Bleecker Street west of Seventh Avenue, Hudson Street, and the streets running toward the river are all strong route options for private walks that cover real distance without heavy pedestrian pressure.

For dogs that find the Washington Square environment overwhelming, we route through the quieter streets west of Sixth Avenue or into the West Village instead. We ask about your dog's comfort level during the meet and greet and plan accordingly.
