It gets busy on weekends but stays manageable on weekday mornings. For longer private walks, the East River pathway is one of the best route options in the neighborhood.
The blocks along Rivington, Delancey, and Ludlow are active throughout the day and require more sidewalk awareness than the quieter streets further east. Between Essex and the river, the residential blocks in the low numbers (Stanton, Rivington, Broome, Grand) are calmer and well-suited for dogs that do better away from the main commercial corridors. The Two Bridges area to the south, along Madison and Monroe Streets near the base of the Manhattan Bridge, is one of the quieter pockets in lower Manhattan.
